The Service Area Map
http://www.straighttalk.com/wps/portal/home/h/coverage/servicearea on the website is painfully out of date. All of the phones there are from the "GSM-A" network. (I know how much you guys hate to use the actual provider's name.)
Most of the phones available to purchase now are not on the list of phones to view from the coverage map.
Here's two suggestions to make finding this information easy for everyone:
1. Each phone available on the website should state specifically which network it operates on. (GSM-A, CDMA-V, etc.)
2. Now that we know which network a phone operates on, the Service Area Map needs only to link to the four possible networks.
You can't assume that anyone knows which phone operates on which network. I, for example, was under the impression that the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5, which were sold by Straight Talk, operated on the GSM-A network. In fact, I passed that information along to a number of people. Imagine my surprise when I find out that they operated on the CDMA-V network. My girlfriend is pissed at me because she got an iPhone 5 from Straight Talk on my recommendation, but since it runs on CDMA-V, she gets no service whatsoever when she visits her parents in a city about 50 miles away. If I'd had the correct information, I could have given her a better recommendation.
Now the new phones I can only make assumptions about, because there is no information on the website to confirm or deny any of it. Do the iPhones 5C and 5S run on the same network as the previous models? Did they switch to a different network? Do all of the Android phones all run off the same network? It's a crapshoot.
Making people call or write to you to find out this basic information only helps to solidify the impression that prepaid providers don't provide adequate support for their products.
As long as I'm ranting, I've got one more. This one about this "forum".
A number of times I've been searching for information here on the forum. Many times after a question is asked, the representative takes the conversation private, so we see the question that we also want answered with no resolution posted. The whole point of a forum is to distribute this knowledge to everyone. It's just frustrating that Straight Talk has decided that this should only be used as a Tech Support contact site.
Rant done.
