Poor phone signal and data speed

Poor phone signal and data speed

Postby crarbo1 » Tue May 22, 2012 1:42 pm

Hello,
I just set up my SIM card for a brand new smart phone with the AT&T coverage. Per the coverage map of AT&T, I should have good phone and data service. However, I am normally only getting 2 bars for regular phone service. Data is actually worse. My new phone is a 4G phone, and I realize that I can't get 4G with this program, I can't even get 3G speeds. What I did was run the speedtest.net app to check speeds. It checks ping, download and upload. My results with the new phone are: 264ms ping, 7kbps download and 1003kbps upload. As you can tell, those speeds are terrible. I checked a different phone right beside mine, and here are it's results (not a 4G phone): 87ms ping, 1214kbps download and 856kbps upload. As you can tell, much better, with the odd exception of upload speed. So, I don't know what is wrong, but I expected better data service.

I hope there is something that can be done.

Any help is appreciated,
Chuck

I stumbled on something that worked from the "Welcome" forums. It was a thread that listed working APN settings. There was just one in there and here it was:
Name-- Straight Talk
APN-- att.mvno
Proxy-- Leave Blank
Port-- 80
MMSC-- http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy-- 66.209.11.33
MMS Port-- 80

Hopefully this post will help other's who have the HTC Inspire 4g

Although I didn't have an HTC Inspire 4g, I do have an HTC One X so I thought I would try it. The settings that was sent with my SIM card was identical to what is above with one exception, the proxy. The card had me enter in a value for it and above it was left blank. Changing that made a world of different for my data. I went from a speedtest.net download results of 8kbps (yes, you read that right), to 3000kbps on average. So, this helped me out tremendously.

Not sure why the proxy info was there if it was causing an issue. It undoubtedly is not needed, so I will go with this. However, if there should be a different setting to optimize my data and possibly my phone signal issue, please help me out with that. I want to make this the best possible situation. I'm trying to get my wife to switch over with her iphone 4, so hopefully, this issue will not give her reason to stay.

Thanks,
Chuck

Thanks,
Chuck
