phone not charging properly

i went to charge it and the screen lit up bright white and it shut down and didn't work again i called in they told me it was defective and i would get a new one in the mail which i didn't
so i bought another straight talk phone i purchesed a zte valet which i hate the merit was so much better
now i plunged in my merit and its working but not charging properly can some one help me
