Why did they even make the android? No service

I upgraded to the Samsung precedent while on vacation. When I typed in my home zip code, it said it covered that area.
Since coming back, my phone has come in only where I live.
I went to visit relatives 45 min. south of me, and my phone gets no service whatsoever as close as 20 miles away from me.
I am wondering why these phones were even made in the first place.
Since then I found the service map, and I only get service in my state, not all areas either.
I had to switch back to my old phone, and am now out $140.
