Slow data and losing connection to cell network

I have a ZTE Majesty (Z796C). Recently I have noticed that my signal will go from mid/high 3G back to a weak 1x. After a few minutes, it will switch back. This is with the phone being stationary. Anytime I try to use data, it always switches back to 1x. In the past couple days, the phone loses all signal. The only way to get it back is to pull the battery.

I have tried restarting the phone (including pulling the battery), going through the activation/programming (*22890), and I've tried updating the PRL (*22891).

Since I've had the phone, once the battery reaches 15-20%, the phone powers off. I have to let it charge for 10-15 minutes before I can turn the phone back on. Once it turns back on, it shows the battery is dead. Is there a software update available for this phone? I have also tried to reset the phone to factory defaults several times.

I am at a loss and need some help.
