no alerts

I am not getting alerts for text messages or for most of my calls. It was working fine for a few months, but now is silent and I am missing communications. I have tried setting changes, checking "mute" settings, etc., and turning phone off and then on. Still a problem. I am not happy with this as it has been an ongoing thing for several months.
