Can't download pictures etc.

I recently purchased the ZTE Merit and phone messages containing pictures won't download...any suggestions on what to do to check to make this work??

I have a ZTE Merit and as of the about Christmas I can no longer get any messages. I get a message that says download but if I hit download it doesn't do anything. Just spins and spins and then resets to the button that says download. Please Help! Did something change with the software or something? DId I turn something off. I have tried everything.
