Hi all. This is my experience.
I have an iPhone 4, from AT&T that is NOT unlocked, running iOS7. My AT&T service ended in June and I've been using the phone as an iPod touch with "No Service" in the top left corner. When I switched to Straight Talk in July, I got a cheap phone just to get service. Last week I discovered I can now buy an AT&T compatible micro-sim. So I did. It came in the mail today. After following Straight Talk's instructions on how to transfer my number and service to the new SIM, I installed it in the iPhone without doing anything else to the phone. No unlocking. Just switch the old AT&T SIM for the new Straight Talk one. Once it caught the network (turn the phone off and back on) I had HOME in the top left, with four out of five...uh...spots (bars). Once I had that, I used the phone with my home wifi to download an APN setting from Straight Talk's mobile website directly to the phone. I followed the links from the ST mobile website to update data settings, then chose the option for the iPhone. That took me to an INSTALL option, which added the Straight Talk APN profile to the phone.
Once I did that, I turned off wifi to see what would happen. The wifi "fan" was replaced by 3G. I live in an area with no 4G or LTE. So I had OOOOO HOME 3G. I tested data, texting, GPS with the Google Maps app, and making and receiving calls. All seemed to work. I noticed though, that I couldn't send a picture in a text. No MMS. This is not necessarily a Straight Talk issue. I went to Settings>Messages on the iPhone and made sure the MMS switch was turned on. Once it was, I could send pictures! Yay. Then, curious, since I'd gotten text messages supposedly from AT&T when the new SIM was first provisioned, I went to the Carrier option in the Settings menu. It said AT&T 15.0. At almost the same time, I got a popup that there were updated carrier settings available. I agreed, and HOME changed to TFW and AT&T 15.0 changed to TFW 15.6.
I put 2+2 together, and realised that TFW meant TracFone Wireless. The name of the carrier on your screen doesn't have an impact on MMS. It may just need to be turned on on your iPhone.
