Google Maps + Data Usage?

Google Maps + Data Usage?

Postby HarryNutz » Thu Jun 28, 2012 6:49 pm

In a few weeks I will be traveling 1134 miles and wondered if anyone has used Google Maps for a long trip and had any issues with Data Usage? ST is the only company who won't reveal to its customers how much data is allowed to be used, so it makes me kind of scratch my head if ST is right for me or not. Granted once I make it to my destination I dont ever foresee running into a data problem... but I cant risk being cutoff mid trip cause the app is using too much data.

Rumor has it that your only allowed 100mb a day and 2GB total a month... though Im kinda wondering why would their be a restriction on daily use when there is already a monthly cap in place? Kind of seems a little excessive in the "I want control of everything" department.

That's a great question. I also travel a lot for business and will need the GPS at times. I do know if you have an android phone you can download a program from the market/Google play store called 3g Watchdog that will help you monitor your usage. It would still be good to hear a response from ST on this though.

I just ordered up a sim for my Prism, and this caught my eye.

I think increasingly folks like ST will be hard to pin down, mostly, I think, because folks abuse it with endless streaming. Just my 2 cents. These new phones have created a boondoggle - they can do so much.

But, first, googlemaps is not going to be running continuously, and will only pull data when you bring it up to look. Second, you could put a data monitor on your phone (I use "My Data Monitor") and take a 10mile test trip and see how much data it uses. My bet is not much. You would have to be driving with one hand and holding your phone in the other hand continuously for it to need to continuously download every inch you travel. But that's just my thoughts! :)

on the other hand if you intend to use it as a replacement for a continuous-on TomTom or whatever, don't.

As mentioned before. It should only consume data when opened and looking at the map.

But still, double check just to make sure!
