you can try to submit a request to the carrier that phone came from and get a factory unlock. takes between 3-7 days i think, there are other ways but im not sure i can tell you how here try searching google have a good one also you could buy a straight talk sim kit and try to see if it works.

This is an old post that I'm replying to,but maybe this will help someone. I gave a friend my old iPhone when I purchased a new one. I forgot to deactivate it on iTunes and they could do nothing with it except make calls until I went into my iTunes and deactivated it.
