connecting LG phone to computer with USB cable doesn't work

I have the cable and the computer sees the device as a CDMA modem. Is there a way to access the memory from the phone? Download to it? Export contact list?

in the settings menu , under Applications , look under development .
Under USB debugging, make sure it has a check mark in its box .
That should help .
