I have been having significant difficulty with my Straight talk service for several weeks now. When I am at my home (where I get two bars service) and attempt to place a call, I get a message as follows: “You are roaming. To call your mobile carrier or any other phone number, purchase a calling pin by pressing 1 now”. When I pressed 1 I get instructions on purchasing an “American Roaming prepaid pin”. When I am in an area with a 3 or 4 bar signal, I am able to make calls. When someone attempts to place a call to me when I am at my home, my phone doesn't ring and the only way I know of the call is if a voice mail message is left. Data and text messaging seems unaffected.
I have spent many hours with Straight talk customer service on this issue, with no resolution. They each go through the same routine of instructing me to reboot my phone, etc, none of which makes any difference. Finally, they informed me that I needed a new SIM card, which they sent to me. However on installing it and activating it, I still get the “You are roaming” message. Then I was informed that everything is fine on their network end and the problem is with my iPhone and that I should go get the phone examined by Apple. I did so only to learn, as I suspected based upon the number of posts with the same problem, that there is no problem with the phone. I have no idea what to do next.
I will no longer recommend Straight Talk service to anyone considering a new carrier. The service is worthless. I guess my only choice is to change carriers unless someone has found a solution for this problem.
