Keeping my phone number

Hello, I just read that after 30 days in keeping my phone deactivated, my phone number will be recycled. I am in the military and deployed in a location where your international plans are not available. Is there a way that I can keep my phone number when I return home in a few months and reactivate my phone service plan?
