I have 2 iPhone 5 phones which will not connect to 3G data.

Postby harrygraves » Mon Jan 21, 2013 9:08 pm

I have bought 3 iPhone (Straight Talk) 5 phones. 2 will not connect to 3G data. Straight Talk support has been unable to get them to function correctly. He told me to take them back to Walmart. However, Walmart doesn't have any replacement phones in our area. What else can be done? I can't believe that the 2 phones are defective. The good phone, that works, is black. The 2 that do not work are white.

You're not the only one. I also just bought an iPhone 5 from Walmart yesterday. Everything works on it except the 3G data. I get an error saying that I have not subscribed to a data plan. How did you fix it?

Hmmm....I thought I posted that I was having the same problem. I too bought an iPhone 5 from Walmart yesterday and I cannot get any 3G or data on it. Every time I try I get an error stating that I need to subscribe to a data plan. What was the fix?

It looks like you will need to give them your serial number. I'm guessing it is some sort of back end fix.

I have also had the same problem. I was running an iPhone 4 fine on Straight Talk for months, and once I got the iPhone 5 from Walmart, the data does not work. Keep getting the message that I am not subscribed to a cellular data plan. Why are they advertising the iPhone 5 for if they can't even support it correctly, and what are we paying for if the data isn't working. They need to fix this ASAP.

Alright...I had the same problem and called Tech Support and they had me do a bunch of things. Here is the process they had me go through. Read all the steps before trying. Also note that if you bought it from Walmart for straight talk you do not need any apn settings changed. It should work right out of the box

Step 1: Erase all data and Settings
Step 2: I actually was restoring a back up from iCloud which takes some time
Step 3: Connect to Wireless (make sure you have this to activate your phone)
Step 4: Make sure to accept the Update from carrier
Step 5: Call *28890 to force an update. There will be no talking and it takes about 40 seconds (at least on my phone it did) and you'll get a conformation message saying it has been updated
Step 6: It still didn't work so Christine had me erase all data and settings again
Step 7: Restored back up (even though I told her that I believe that the APN changer settings would still be active, she insisted that they wouldn't)
Step 8: Once restored I went in and deleted the APN changer and then updated
Step 9: Did the Carrier update (this is an automatic one not an manual one)
Step 10: Called *28890 again to force an update and still didn't work
Step 11: She was escalating the problem and going to contact the carrier.
Step 12: While she put me on hold tried my experiment of "Erase all Settings" (found under Settings -> General -> Reset)
Step 13: She came back and the carrier had asked for me to Erase all content and settings (was still in the middle of step 12)
Step 14: After step 12 finished I tried the internet and it worked.

I had tried telling her at the beginning that Resetting all settings might be what I need. She said Erase all content and settings (which does work just takes a lot longer).

Moral of the story (after 1 hr and 15 minutes) follow your gut and just reset all settings. Note that this changes all settings back to the initial settings (ringers, text sounds, backgrounds) but does not delete data.

Good luck

Hi Cyclone, How were you able to get your iPhone 4 data working? Did you have to do anything differently? I suppose that same thing needs to be done to the iPhone 5 for data to work. I have an iPhone 4s I have successfully used on Straight Talk since Sept/2012. I was advised by Straight Talk support to "Jailbreak" my device. I did not want to do this. I found other options that have made Data/MMS work. I wonder if you can apply those same options on the iPhone 5 for Data/MMS to function? Is anyone having MMS problems with the NEW iPhone 5 or is it just with the Data?

Thanks
Garth
