upgrades

hey i have a question....I heard that straight talk upgraded or something like that and that you had to get a new simcard and you would get service..Like for an example my boyfriend has straight and so does his grandmother along with someone else and we all live in the same trailor park...and his grandmother gets perfect service however my boyfriend doesnt and another guy said that its because straight talk upgraded and they have to send u another simcard because he wasnt getting service anywhere and now he does....and now i want answers please anyone... let me know how i can go about this...Thanks
