Slowrider5 wrote:OK folks. I finally have my ST iPhone 5 working with 3G data service. First of all, don't think that those Private Messages have the secret to success. They consist of nothing more than "please send me your MEID, or please try rebooting your phone, or please erase all settings".
I did all these steps on my previous ST iPhone 5 numerous times. There was one point where I did get data service while the ST support rep was on the line. It was quite slow, but I agreed it was working and hung up. Of course, shortly thereafter it stopped again. I could never get it going again, no matter how many times I reset network settings, or erased all content and settings, or dialed *22890. Finally, ST support gave up on me and advised me to get a new iPhone at Walmart. ***NOTE if you do this, and I recommend you do if nothing else to make this costly for Walmart, make sure you get your new phone first and transfer your number. If you return your existing phone first, you will lose your phone number****
So, I picked up a new phone, had issues as I did with the first phone because when you do "Site to Store" pickup the serial/MEID doesn't get scanned properly and it can't be activated. Got that corrected, brought it home, activated online and transferred the number from my old iPhone 5 via the ST website. Of course, data service did not work with the same error - Could Note Activate Cellular Data Network.
Was just about ready to give up and go back to Verizon. Decided to call ST support one more time. Step one, they asked me to dial *22890. I told them I had already done this and refused to do it again. Step two, they advised make sure my iphone and itunes were up to date. I told them this was complete - as I was not going to wait to update to iOS 6.1 and was impatient. Step three, Erase all Content and Settings. I obliged even though I was sure this would not work. Well, what do you know it did work.
I noticed that the ST support does not seem to get the fact that you can connect/backup to iCloud instead of iTunes. Right after the reset, the rep did not want me to connect to wifi and just wanted me to connect to my computer with iTunes. I connected to iTunes, but decided to connect to wifi anyway. I connected to wifi and restored from iCloud since that is where my backups were. You can only restore from iCloud backup when first setting up phone. I was still connected to iTunes at the same time, and accepted the message there to Download and Update carrier settings thru iTunes at one point when it popped up. I have no idea if this makes a difference or not, can't understand why it would.
At the end of the day, I'm still at a loss to explain why this last "Erase Content and Settings" worked but did not work previously. I did not dial *22890 again after doing it. Maybe it is the case that some of the phones out there have some bad firmware??? Since ST and Walmart can't seem to get this straight, my advice is exchange your iPhone at Walmart and make it painful for them from a $$$ perspective. If enough people start returning $700 pieces of equipment, they should get the message. I got a bit of a runaround returning my first one today, but walked out of the store with $700 in my pocket because I was within my 15 day return window. No doubt a worker will steal that phone from the customer service return bin - but not my problem. After spending 2-3 hours a night on the phone with ST support every night this past week, they deserve it.
