my phone is saying "Mobile Network not available"

I have very inconsistent service with my LG V20 phone. I periodically get a message of "Mobile Network not available" but I can use WIFI. The problem is sporadic yet frustrating because I have to keep trying to connect, sometime over 10-20 tries to connect before I'm able to make a call.
