T404G and problems with Google Maps

I downloaded Google Maps for my new T404G, which is one of the main reasons I upgraded phones, but it freezes 90% through the loading screen. Opera mini worked on it, so I don't think it's a problem with Java. Is there any way to solve this?

Also, I can't seem to find a way to get rid of the irritating service length scroll on the bottom of the screen. I know it can be done with this particular model when it's registered to TracFone because there are instructions to do it on their forum as well as a reply post about successful removal. The option isn't available under Prepaid on my phone however. Help please, I'm on unlimited autofill so I really don't care when my service plan expires!
