iPhone Configuration Walkthrough *NO JAILBREAK!*

Note to Straight Talk Wireless Forum admins: Hundreds of people come in here asking the same question about their iPhones over and over. They are subject to waiting for post approval and all kinds of other time-consuming caveats which leads to further customer frustration. I'm not saying there should be a walkthrough guide for every cell phone on earth (that is way too many), but I think the iPhone is popular enough to warrant making this post sticky so people don't have to keep going through the same aggravating tedium to get their iPhone working.

Note to everyone else: If you are unsure of what you are doing or find this guide beyond the comfort zone of your expertise, please make a new thread posting your issue and one of the ST personnel will directly assist you with your specific problem.

I have an AT&T Unlocked iPhone 3GS. I had some trouble getting Cellular Data Network working on it as well, but now I have everything working: voice, SMS, MMS, and 3G data. You can use the iPhone Configuration Utility to configure your APN settings to match Straight Talk's APN sepcifications. This will enable SMS and cellular data. See Apple's knowledge-base article here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4839 .

As for getting MMS APN settings changed so you can send/receive MMS messages (pix/video messages), this requires a bit more editing but using a 3rd party program because the iPCU does not offer the ability to change the MMS APN settings. Changing the MMS APN settings with this method DOES NOT require jailbreaking. I used iBackupBot to do this. Download Page: http://www.icopybot.com/itunes-backup-manager.htm (download the Free Trial)

*NOTE* The following information is composed based on iOS 5.1.1 configurations and an AT&T Unlocked iPhone 3GS.

1. What you have to do is first make a backup of your iPhone using iTunes. If you are unsure how to do this, please visit http://support.apple.com/, or click Help within iTunes.

2. Then use iBackupBot to open your backup file and you will be able to see all of the iOS files it contains. (It automatically searches your iTunes folders for the backup files you have.)

3. On the left, be sure your iPhone backup is selected. On the right, you will see all of your iPhone's files. Click the "Path" column header to sort the list by path.

4. *Informational Step* To edit any of these files, you will simply double-click one to open it. Each time you open a file, you will be prompted to enter registration information. Just click Cancel to continue when that happens.

5. *Informational Step* The files you will need to edit are "SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist" and "Library/Preferences/com.apple.mms_override.plist".

6. Double-Click "SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist" to open it. (Do NOT confuse this with "Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preferences.plist"! THAT would be the wrong file!)

7. Change ALL INSTANCES of “wap.cingular” to “att.mvno” as recommended by StraightTalk. (Yes, there WILL BE more than one occurrence of "wap.cingular" in that file and they ALL need changed as noted). It is recommended that you click the binoculars icon at the top of the window to search for wap.cingular, replace it with the att.mvno setting, and then repeat this process until they are all changed. Once ALL entries of wap.cingular have been changed to att.mvno, click save (far left icon at the top of the window).

8. Now Double-Click "Library/Preferences/com.apple.mms_override.plist" to open it. (Again, click Cancel when prompted for registration information).

9. Delete EVERYTHING in the file. There should be 8 lines of code and it looks like this:
Code: Select all
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
   <key>MMS</key>
   <dict/>
</dict>
</plist>

10. Once everything is erased, replace it with this code. This will hard code the IP address for the proxy setting:
Code: Select all
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
  <key>MMS</key>
  <dict>
    <key>Proxy</key>
    <string>66.209.11.33:80</string>
  </dict>
</dict>
</plist>

11. Click save, and then close iBackupBot entirely.

12. Now go into iTunes and restore your phone.

Once the restore is finished, you should have MMS working on your iPhone 3GS with StraightTalk service. Enjoy! :)

*UPDATE 9/27/2012* I just connected my iPhone to iTunes just to verify my instructions here and saw iOS 6 update was available. I made a backup of my phone, and THEN updated to iOS 6. I did NOT have to re-edit ANY of my settings whatsoever (even MMS). I saw someone else say they updated to iOS 6 and all of their settings were reset, but I wonder if they backed up their phone first. ALWAYS BACKUP YOUR IPHONE BEFORE MAKING CHANGES! ;)

This thread is getting quite a few views!

As for testing this walkthrough on an iPhone with iOS 6 needing the APN changed to Straight Talk, I have not tested that yet. Shame on me! I promise I will this Sunday.

This worked great for me. iPhone 3G

For the Library/Preferences/com.apple.mms_override.plist file, I used this instead (from http://wiki.howardforums.com/index.php/Straight_Talk_iPhone#Data_for_non-Jailbroken_devices)

Code: Select all
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
   <key>MMS</key>
   <dict>
            <key>MMSC</key>
            <string>http://mmsc.cingular.com</string>
            <key>MaxMessageSize</key>
            <integer>1048576</integer>
            <key>Proxy</key>
            <string>66.209.11.33:80</string>
            <key>UAProf</key>
            <string>http://www.apple.com/mms/uaprof.rdf</string>
   </dict>
</dict>
</plist>

For current AT&T blue Sim and on a ST iphone 5 on ios 6.1.3 and any iphone 3gs or newer on ios 6.whatever. Line 7 in the above instructions change / use "tfdata" instead.
Then I used the following updated Apn settings for ATT Straighttalk.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>MMS</key>
<dict>
<key>MMSC</key>
<string>http://mms-tf.net</string>
<key>MaxMessageSize</key>
<integer>1048576</integer>
<key>Proxy</key>
<string>mms3.tracfone.com</string>
<key>UAProf</key>
<string>http://www.apple.com/mms/uaprof.rdf</string>
</dict>
</dict>
</plist>
